The Davis Tract House, a historically significant 16-acre property in Chadds Ford, has officially been preserved, writes Rich Schwartzman for Chadds Ford Live.
It will serve as the new headquarters of the North American Land Trust (NALT).
Previously owned by artist N.C. Wyeth, who illustrated Treasure Island there, the property also played a role in the 1777 Battle of Brandywine. There, Gen. Anthony Wayne’s Pennsylvania division established a defensive line. The site has passed through several hands over the years, including the Winthers and the Camps.
The preservation of the property reflects both cultural and historical significance, which pairs nicely with NALT’s mission. “This project represents the very heart of our mission – preserving the landscapes that shape our nation’s history and future,” said NALT President Steve Carter.
Chadds Ford Township will hold the permanent conservation easement, ensuring the land remains protected.
NALT raised over $3 million for the acquisition and plans to develop a pollinator habitat on the property, like their efforts at Brinton Run Preserve close by. Township Supervisor Kathleen Goodier praised the acquisition as fulfilling “long-standing preservation goals” and welcomed NALT’s relocation to the historic Joseph Davis House, built in 1725.
