Irish Are Well Represented in Pennsylvania, Delaware County

Delaware County has a thriving Irish population and culture.

They say on St. Patrick’s Day, everybody’s Irish, but how many of us in Delaware County actually are?

In Pennsylvania, about 14.8 percent of  us can claim Irish ancestry. That’s 1.9 million Pennsylvanians, writes Kathryne Rubright for the Pocono Record.

Pennsylvanians with German ancestry pull out ahead of the Irish, representing 21.7 percent of the state’s population, according to U.S. Census data.

Rounding out the top five for Pennsylvania’s population groups are the Italians, English and Polish.

Here in Delaware County, about 22 percent of us have Irish ancestry, according to the U.S. Census. That places us third in Pennsylvania for counties with the most Irish..

The highest concentration of those with Irish heritage are in Lackawanna County, at 23.7 percent.

That’s followed by Bucks County, which has 22.2 percent.

Chester County sits just below Delaware County, at 20.1 percent, followed by Susquehanna (20.1), Butler (19.5), Pike (19.2), Montgomery (19), Wayne (18.3), and Blair County, at 18.1 percent.

Philadelphia County actually ranks close to the bottom for Irish ancestry in its population, at only 9.6 percent.

Combined, Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and Chester counties comprise the most Irish in Pennsylvania, ranking in the top eight.
