The Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority Now Has a Long Promising Future

Schuylkill River Authority extended to 2072, advancing rail service restoration between Reading and Philadelphia.

The future of the Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority (SRPRA) looks promising, writes Karen Shuey for the Reading Eagle.

The Berks County commissioners unanimously voted to extend the authority’s existence through June 2072. The vote was contingent on approval from Chester and Montgomery counties. Established in July 2022, the SRPRA aims to lay the groundwork for a rail line connecting Reading, Pottstown, and Phoenixville by working with Amtrak, Norfolk Southern, PennDOT, and the Federal Railroad Administration.

The recent resolution fulfills a clause in the original articles of incorporation, requiring the counties to reauthorize the authority after three years. Commissioners Chairman Christian Leinbach emphasized their strong standing in the project. He noted that authorities in Pennsylvania are typically established for 50 years. Since the cessation of passenger rail service in 1983, efforts have persisted for over two decades to revive it.

In December 2023, the SRPRA was accepted into a crucial federal program, offering significant financial support. The authority has completed the initial phase of the Corridor Identification and Development Program to evaluate the project’s scope and cost. The next steps involve developing a service plan, analyzing ridership and revenue forecasts, and conducting preliminary engineering. This complex process aims to culminate in a final design and potential implementation.
