Brandywine Valley Heating & Air Conditioning Shares Tips to Protect Your Home from Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a silent threat in your home, but you can learn how to safeguard your family with expert tips from BVHVAC.

It’s easy to keep tabs on the things you can see in your house, such as repairing a leaky faucet or adjusting the thermostat. But what about the things you can’t see, such as carbon monoxide (CO)? And how do you address a carbon monoxide issue if you have one?

Bill Vanderslice of Brandywine Valley Heating & Air Conditioning (BVHVAC) of West Chester shared the risks of carbon monoxide and the steps you can take to protect your home.

What Is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that poses a serious threat to your household. Each year, over 50,000 people visit the emergency room due to CO poisoning, and tragically, around 500 lives are lost.

Many common household items — like gas appliances, fireplaces, and even vehicles in attached garages — can produce this dangerous gas. Protecting your loved ones starts with awareness and action.

What You Can Do to Safeguard Against Carbon Monoxide

  • Install a low-level carbon monoxide monitor near every sleeping area in your home.
  • Test your CO monitor regularly to ensure it’s working.
  • Never operate portable generators indoors.
  • Schedule a professional inspection for your heating system each year.

Additionally, Vanderslice recommends that households install an NSI 6000 to provide accurate and reliable carbon monoxide alerts.

This advanced monitor provides early alerts for CO levels that other detectors might miss, with features designed to protect your family:

  • Low-Level Alert: Double beep every eight seconds (15-34 ppm).
  • Mid-Level Alert: Four beeps every four seconds (35-69 ppm).
  • High-Level Alert: Eight beeps every four seconds (70+ ppm).
