Over 1,900 canines and 200 breeds competed at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s annual National Dog Show in Oaks on Saturday.

Hundreds of dogs descended on Oaks this Saturday for the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s annual National Dog Show, writes Rita Giordano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

More than 1,900 canines and a record number of 205 breeds were seen strutting and primping at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. The dogs and their owners came from 40 states, D.C., as well as five from abroad.

The event will air on television on Thanksgiving, when the champions in each category, as well as the winner of Best in Show award, will be announced.

Goldens were among the most represented breeds. Many, along with their veteran handlers took the event very seriously. Others not so much. One of the newcomers was August, a good-size 7-month-old who was very excited about the hot dogs.

“We’re still very new to this,” said August’s owner, Katie Wickum, a dog walker and groomer from Preston, Maryland. “We’re nervous. Well, me. He goes with the flow. His favorite part is the hot dogs.”
