As we near the winter season, it’s time to lace up your skates and enjoy the great seasonal activity of ice skating, writes Maureen Rayburn for Mommy Poppins.
Ice skating is one of the best winter pastimes, whether it’s a date night for couples or a weekend family outing and Chester County has two great, outdoor options.
French Creek State Park in Elverson boats two natural ice lakes, which is perfect for those who want to enjoy nature and its breathtaking views while skating.
Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown is beautiful all year round and is popular for summertime water activities, but don’t forget to visit in the winter as well! Not only do they offer sledding and cross-country skiing, but visitors can skate on the natural ice.
For both state parks, visitors must bring their own skates. Ice thickness is not monitored by either park, so you will want to check for yourself upon arrival. The recommended thickness is four inches and life jackets are always advised for additional safety. Be sure to check the weather forecast in advance!
For those looking for monitored ice rinks, there are a variety of options nearby in Philadelphia.
