Arc of Chester County Highlights Journey of John Koresko
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time dedicated to recognizing the contributions of workers with disabilities and advocating for inclusive hiring practices.
In honor of this important month, The Arc of Chester County is proud to highlight the inspiring journey of John Koresko, whose determination and growth have been supported by Riley Sales, Inc.
John, a participant in The Arc’s Comprehensive Employment Services (CES) program, completed the HVAC program at Delaware County Community College in 2023.
Eager to apply his skills and join the workforce, John partnered with The Arc to find meaningful employment. After facing challenges in securing a role with local HVAC companies, The Arc shifted its approach and explored opportunities with HVAC supply companies, leading them to Riley Sales, Inc. in Plymouth Meeting.
The initial meeting with Debbie Riley was warm and welcoming, laying the groundwork for John’s journey. Her brother, Michael Riley, quickly took the initiative to meet John and conduct a formal interview.
During the interview, Michael emphasized three fundamental expectations for all employees by saying, “Show up, show up on time, and show initiative.” John embraced these principles and was offered a position as a warehouse associate shortly thereafter.
From his first day on the job, John received support from The Arc, which ensured a smooth transition into his new role.
Riley Sales’ inclusive and supportive culture was evident as John was welcomed with open arms by the team. One colleague, Dominic, became a mentor and guide for John, demonstrating patience and encouragement as John adapted to the warehouse environment. Dominic’s commitment to helping John succeed went beyond basic training, fostering a sense of camaraderie that empowered John to take on new responsibilities and challenges.
John’s eagerness to learn was apparent from the start, and his dedication soon paid off. He recently earned a raise and the opportunity to work as a full-time employee, achievements that reflect not only his own hard work but also the nurturing environment created by his colleagues at Riley Sales.
As John continues to develop his skills, he exemplifies the spirit of NDEAM, demonstrating that individuals with disabilities can thrive and make significant contributions when given the opportunity.
The Arc of Chester County is proud to share John’s story as an example of the positive impact that inclusive hiring can have on both individuals and businesses.
His journey with Riles Sales underscores the importance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the ongoing efforts to create accessible employment opportunities for all.
Riley Sales, Inc’s commitment to an inclusive workplace earned them The Arc of Chester County’s 2024 Employer of the Year Award. The Arc was honored to recognize their commitment to inclusive hiring practices and support for employees with disabilities.
