Join The Colonial Theatre for National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The Colonial will screen the following films celebrating the filmmakers and actors within. The following films will be presented in their original language with the appropriate subtitles.
El Espinazo del Diablo (The Devil’s Backbone)
After losing his father, 10-year-old Carlos (Fernando Tielve) arrives at the Santa Lucia School, which shelters orphans of the Republican militia and politicians and is taken in by the steely headmistress, Carmen (Marisa Paredes), and the kindly professor, Casares (Federico Luppi). Soon after his arrival, Carlos has a run-in with the violent caretaker, Jacinto (Eduardo Noriega). Gradually, Carlos uncovers the secrets of the school, including the youthful ghost that wanders the grounds. The film will be presented in Spanish with English Subtitles.
Frida
This is the true story of Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) and her husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), the larger-than-life painters who became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history, and whose tempestuous love affair, landmark journeys to America, and outrageous personalities made them legendary. The film will be presented in English with Spanish Subtitles.
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth)
In 1944, in Spain, young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her ailing mother (Ariadna Gil) arrive at the post of her mother’s new husband (Sergi López). This sadistic army officer is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising. While exploring an ancient maze, Ofelia encounters the faun Pan, who tells her that she is a legendary lost princess and must complete three dangerous tasks to claim immortality. The film will be presented in Spanish with English Subtitles.
Drácula (1931)
Soon after beginning work for Conde Dracula (Carlos Villarias), the clerk Renfield (Pablo Alvarez Rubio) learns that his employer is, in fact, a vampire who lives on human blood. Now under Dracula’s spell, Renfield helps his master travel to London, where the vampire takes another victim (Carmen Guerrero). Dracula also has eyes on the lovely Eva (Lupita Tovar), but her fiancé, Juan Harker (Barry Norton), and a wise professor named Van Helsing (Eduardo Arozamena) seek to stop him. The film will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles and is sponsored by Mad Shelley Comics.
