Oktoberfest is nearly upon us, and with it come many popular local celebrations and some newcomers to make sure you have a great time while enjoying a giant stein and a delicious soft pretzel, writes Laura Swartz for Philadelphia Magazine.
On September 21, the 16th Annual South Street Oktoberfest — organized by Brauhaus Schmitz — will take over the 700 block of South Street with live music, German dancers, a variety of games, face painting, and a competition to see who can hold a full beer stein the longest.
Another fun event will be held at the 1700 block of Germantown Avenue. Human Robot’s USA vs. The World: An Oktoberfest Celebration will see breweries from Philadelphia and beyond pitted against their German ancestors to see who makes the best lager. You can also enjoy the annual milktube race, eat food truck fare, and enjoy live music.
Evil Genius Oktoberfest Celebration will have a stein-holding competition and branded steins for sale, as well as live music, pretzels, and German food.
Meanwhile, Oktoberfest at Frankford Hall will feature a family-friendly beer garden. The day will include live music, food and drink specials, kids’ activities until 4 PM, and indoor and outdoor fun.
