BluePearl Pet Hospital in Malvern is the world’s first veterinary clinic to use the CyberKnife, a robotic system for non-invasive radiation therapy, writes Caitlin McCafferty for dvm360.
The CyberKnife, which may have a slightly intimidating name, treats both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors with high precision. It offers a faster treatment option and reduces the number of radiation sessions from 16-20 to just 1-5, with fewer side effects and no recovery time.
Humans have been utilizing it in the medical field for far longer, making it completely new to the veterinary practice.
“If your pet is diagnosed with cancer, it can be an incredibly traumatic time, full of uncertainty and fear,” said Richard Stone, chief medical officer at BluePearl. “Our team in Malvern is providing the highest quality of care to pets that are diagnosed with cancer, with our Veterinary CyberKnife Cancer Center…”
This means patients (beloved pets) have a pain-free, less toxic procedure. It precisely targets tumors while sparing healthy tissue compared to radiation therapy.
Years of research on its use in dogs and humans has shown promising outcomes, making it a significant advancement in veterinary oncology.
