American Airlines has released its summer 2025 schedule with continued investment in Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) as an East Coast gateway for travelers from Europe.  

The schedule includes direct service to Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI), for the first time since 2019 and new direct service to Milan, Italy (MXP). Daily service on both routes will begin May 23, 2025. American further announced that the three seasonal routes from PHL that began in summer 2024 will return in 2025, including direct flights to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH); Naples, Italy (NAP); and Nice, France (NCE).  

The news of the 2025 schedule from PHL was welcomed by the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, which promotes international tourism to the city through its offices in 10 key international markets.

“We’re very excited to see Philadelphia’s growth as a key East Coast gateway continue into 2025,” said PHLCVB President and CEO Gregg Caren. “In announcing these new seasonal routes from PHL to Edinburgh and Milan and, just as importantly, in renewing the routes to Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice, American Airlines is showing tremendous confidence in Philadelphia as an international destination. Their confidence underscores the interest we’re seeing in Philadelphia from business and leisure travelers from all over the world.”

That interest is certainly a factor in American Airlines’ continued commitment to PHL.

In a recent interview with the Philadelphia Business Journal, PHL Chief Commercial Officer Kate Sullivan said that, in the past year, Philadelphia International was American’s fastest-growing hub in number of seats added.

PHL also offers other advantages to travelers, including train connectivity (via SEPTA) to Center City — not common for large U.S. city airports — and shorter processing times for Customs when compared to other East Coast airports. 

With this announcement and continued momentum heading into 2025, Philadelphia is well-positioned to leverage the visibility it will enjoy as it hosts an impressive slate of national and international events, including the 2026 MLB All Star Game, 2026 PGA World Championship, FIFA World Cup 2026, and the nation’s Semiquincentennial, also in 2026.
