Valley Forge native Tory Burch turned her lifelong dream of owning and leading a recognized brand into a reality becoming an inspiration to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs, writes Kara Silk for Swatch by AMDA.
The 58-year-old Burch was raised by Reva and Ira Robinson, who introduced her to high fashion at a young age and instilled a keen sense of style in her. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. In 2004, she launched her New York City flagship boutique.
She first focused on tunics, handbags, jewelry, and shoes. Her brand caught the public eye for its distinctive designs and reasonable prices.
One of the turning points in her career was when her collection was touted as “the next big thing in fashion” by Oprah Winfrey on her show.
In 2008, Burch was recognized as Accessory Designer of The Year, and the following year, she appeared as on an episode of Gossip Girl. The cast of the popular show often wore her designs.
She made her New York Fashion Week debut in 2011.
Over the years, she added many accessories to her brand, including sunglasses, and a perfume line.
