Phoenixville Hospital ICU Nurse Michelle Lombardi was recently honored on Philadelphia Magazine’s 2024 Best of Philly list as “Best Foster Parent,” writes Justin Heinze for Patch.
Lombardi’s patient was living out of his car and faced a dilemma when he had to spend an extended period in the hospital. He didn’t know what would happen to his dog.
Demonstrating remarkable empathy, Lombardi obtained permission from the patient and took the dog into her own home, caring for it as if it were her own pet.
During this time, she was also part of the medical team that nursed the patient back to health. The patient expressed immense gratitude towards Lombardi, not only for her medical care but also for her kindness in looking after his dog.
Her dedication continued until the patient recovered, secured an apartment, and could reunite with his pet. For her extraordinary compassion, Lombardi was awarded a Daisy award, recognizing her exceptional service and care. This award is part of a national program that seeks to acknowledge above-and-beyond work from nurses.
