Volunteer Group ‘Litter Lifters’ Strive to Keep Chester County Trash-Free
Litter Lifters, a group of 200 volunteers, are working diligently around Chester County to properly dispose of wrongly discarded trash, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.
Litter Lifters are led by volunteer Beth Intoccia, fondly known as “The Litter Queen of Chester County.”
“I had an idea four years ago to start a litter task force in West Vincent Township, Chester Springs, that blossomed into my idea of cleaning up the whole county – which we are doing with the help of many government leaders, businesses, and volunteers,” said Intoccia. “The litter is piling up alongside the roads.
Intoccia also noted that along with the growth Chester County has been experiencing, so comes the litter. “There is an entire generation of people who do not understand they should never litter – they should secure their open loads; they should never leave fishing line behind, and they should never release balloons into the environment as this kills wildlife.”
Chester County Commissioners cited Intoccia with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2023. Intoccia believes that when businesses, elected officials, and individuals work together, Chester County will be clean.
At her heart, she believes that everyone deserves a beautiful and clean environment and that every municipality should have a litter management plan in place, as there is a correlation between litter, property values, economic prosperity, and crime.
