I Scream, You Scream: Downingtown Welcomes New Handel’s Ice Cream Shop

From left, owner Andy Rick, employee Shelby Fabian, and owner Maria Rick of the new Handel's in Downingtown.

Last week, Downingtown welcomed a new ice cream shop, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, at 520 E. Lancaster Avenue, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.

Berwyn couple Maria and Andy Rick own this shop and another franchise location in Royersford. The two find satisfaction in watching others smile and enjoy the ice cream they make, especially seeing kids happy.

They make fresh ice cream every day, and all ice cream is only 1-4 days old. They sell 47 flavors, which change monthly. Specialties this month include birthday cake, monkey business, chocolate peanut butter brownie, and many more.

“What sets us apart is that the texture is hard but with a soft consistency because the ice cream doesn’t get frozen,” said Maria Rick.

Cone options include waffles, dipped waffles, and sugar cones. Some toppings on the cone and waffle bowls include sprinkles, nut pieces, and tiny M&Ms.

At the grand opening on Thursday, the first 100 people in line were gifted certificates to have a small cone or ice cream bowl for every week of the year.

The Downingtown location is open Mondays through Sundays, from 11 AM to 10 PM.
