Malvern-based Annovis Bio recently reported positive clinical trial results for buntanetap, the biopharmaceutical company’s lead new drug candidate in Parkinson’s disease patients, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The news sent the company’s stock soaring with a 75 percent gain for last week.
Annovis announced in January it was postponing the release of data for phase 3 of buntanetap clinical trial because of “data cleaning” efforts that were required to make sure the study results were accurate and reliable.
The results were finally released last week. They showed “statistically significant improvements in cognition” as well as improvements in motor and non-motor activities in patients with early Parkinson’s disease.
“We are very pleased to see improvements in many of our patients over such a short course of treatment,” said Maria Maccecchini, founder and CEO of Annovis.
She added during a call with industry analysts that the next steps for the company are to summarize the study data, submit it to the FDA, and ask for an October meeting with the agency.
“At that meeting, we want to ask to file a [new drug application for buntanetap in Parkinson’s disease],” she said.
