A majority of eligible fire and EMS volunteers have successfully applied for their property tax rebate adopted six months ago by Chester County, writes Jim Melwert for KYW Newsradio.
The Active Volunteer Real Estate Tax Rebate Ordinance allows first responder volunteers to receive a rebate on real estate tax that is imposed by the county.
“Any opportunity we can do to thank people for putting in that work, that training every single week is critically important because it’s the only value they’re getting back from it,” said Chester County Commissioner Josh Maxwell. “But it is knowing that they’re saving lives, and certainly knowing that they’re appreciated for doing it.”
Volunteers qualify for points that give them rebates on county property tax by responding to calls and training, as well as attending meetings, fundraising, and holding leadership roles. Achieving the maximum number of points provides a 100 percent rebate on the tax.
So far, 355 volunteers – or 60 percent – have successfully applied for the rebate. The remaining 40 percent have until January 2025 to complete their application.
