Phillie Phanatic Surprises World War II Army Veteran on His 100th Birthday in Spring City
Paul Trumbetas, a World War II veteran and Phillies fan, celebrated his 100th year in Chester County at a special birthday party, writes Kim Hudson for CBS News Philadelphia.
Trumbetas was stunned when he saw his birthday surprise, saying, “I can’t believe it.”
The Phillie Phanatic pulled up to the Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City on military vehicles to celebrate Trumbetas’ 100th birthday and his military service as a World War II Army veteran. His daughter, Denise Selzer, said that it started with an email that she sent, requesting a small favor from her father’s favorite sports team.
“Maybe let us go to a game when he celebrated his 100th birthday, and they came back with this,” Selzer said. Trumbetas’ family was touched by the grand gesture.
The party, filled with Trumbetas’ fellow residents and veterans, was a part of the Phillies Salute to Service.
Trumbetas’ party had an honor guard, birthday cake, and even an ice cream truck. His wife and children were also at the celebration.
Phillies legend Mickey Morandini gave Trumbetas the ball that he will throw as the first pitch on Saturday, May 18.
When asked his advice for the team, Trumbetas said, “Tell them to keep hitting, that’s all. Keep hitting.”
