Nexus Revealed: Brandywine Museum of Art Showcases Frank Stewart’s Visionary Work

Frank Stewart, Stomping the Blues, 1997. Stewart's photographic journey capturing decades of culture and history is on on view at the Brandywine Museum of Art from June 30 through September 22, 2024.

This summer, the Brandywine Museum of Art invites you to step into the world of Frank Stewart with their latest exhibition, “Nexus: An American Photographer’s Journey, 1960s to the Present.” This showcase takes you through more than six decades of Stewart’s brilliant career, capturing a rich tapestry of global cultures and Black life.

With a stunning collection of over 100 photographs in both black-and-white and color, the exhibition beautifully illustrates Stewart’s knack for capturing the essence of his subjects—whether it’s through the rhythms of music, the strokes of art, or the flavors of travel and dance.

The exhibit is a joint effort with The Phillips Collection and the Telfair Museums, underscoring Stewart’s profound influence in the world of photography. His photos, deeply intimate and empathetic, transport viewers from familiar American cities to the far reaches of Africa and Cuba.

Fred Moten, a poet and scholar who co-curated the exhibition, shares, “Frank Stewart’s approach to photography merges deep affection for his subjects with a meticulous eye for detail, offering us a window into the soul of contemporary art.”

Starting as a teenager documenting the 1963 March on Washington, Stewart’s career expanded significantly during his time with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Here, he immortalized legends like Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.

Ruth Fine, another voice in the curatorial team, remarks on the thematic depth of the exhibition: “Stewart’s photographs delve into the subtle intricacies of human connections and societal bonds, capturing moments of truth with unparalleled authenticity.”

This is your last chance to catch this evocative display at the Brandywine Museum of Art, after making rounds in Washington, D.C., Naples, Florida, and Savannah, Georgia.

It’s a deep dive into the life’s work of a man who has spent over half a century documenting the human condition in all its glory and complexity.

The exhibition will be on view at the Brandywine Museum of Art from June 30 through September 22, 2024.
