Chadds Ford resident Rob Newman, 73, has been named Pilot of the Year for his work in transporting patients in need through Angel Flight, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.

Angel Flight is a nonprofit run by volunteer pilots who fly medical patients to their destinations for treatment, free of charge. Everything is paid for by the pilots.

Newman was an F-4 pilot for the United States Air Force. In addition to flying patients, he has also helped animal organizations fly dogs from no-kill shelters, sea turtles, and disaster relief missions.

“I get to help out people who really need a hand,” he said. “And I get to do something I really like to do—fly.”

Recently, Newman helped a 12-year-old boy with an extremely rare disease get from Ohio to Boston to see doctors, saving his family a 17-hour car drive that just took 3.5 hours by plane.

He has been on 47 missions since 2018 and has no plans to stop soon.
