Jim's Steaks on South Street was forced to shut down in July 2022 due to a fire. On May 1, 2024, it will open its doors once again.

Jim’s Steaks on South Street is reopening in early May after a devastating fire forced the shop to shut its door in the summer of 2022, writes Rosie Leonard for KYW Newsradio.

On July 29, 2022, a two-alarm fire broke out in the kitchen, leading firefighters to spend about five hours trying to put it out.

Crews have spent the last nearly two years reconstructing the building, which dates back to the late 1800s. Officials say the cause of the fire was faulty electrical wiring.

Ken Silver, president of Jim’s Steaks, said the new space will be bigger and better than the previous.

They bought the next door storefront, Eye’s Gallery, which will allow seating for an additional 60 customers.

“The transformation of the space is incredible to behold and will endure as one of our proudest endeavors,” Silver said.

Although new additions will be plentiful, some traditions will remain. This includes the staff, the cash-only payments, and its status as a late-night staple.

“We’re almost there and can’t wait to welcome you back! You won’t believe the incredible transformation of our building (now two buildings) but we’re sure you’ll enjoy the same great sandwiches as always,” said Silver.
