A section of Route 41 in West Fallowfield will be named in honor of Corporal Brandon Hardy, a marine from Cochranville who was killed in Iraq in 2006, writes staff for The Daily Local News

The intersection with Bernard Avenue to the intersection with Highland Road on Route 41 will be dedicated as the “Corporal Brandon Hardy Memorial Highway” later this April. This route spans from the Hardy family home to Octorara High School

“We are so honored to have this section of Route 41 dedicated to Brandon,” said Jill Hardy, Brandon’s mother. “It warms my heart that even almost 18 years after his death, this community still remembers him and honors his sacrifice.”

Hardy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1999. In 2005, he made an unusual choice: he chose to forgo his rank and pay and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was then deployed to Iraq in 2006 as a crew chief of an amphibious assault vehicle.

On April 28, 2006, Hardy was on an aid and assist mission. After completing the mission, Hardy’s vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, leaving him mortally wounded.

Upon learning about Hardy’s story, Senator Carolyn Comitta introduced legislation to enact the road name dedication, which was later signed into law.

“Corporal Hardy was an exceptional American and his story is that of so many brave soldiers who put themselves in harm’s way in service to our nation.” Comitta said.
