Coatesville native Justin Brown is the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Downingtown Area School District. He serves as the internal consultant to the superintendent, assistant superintendent, executive leadership team, and principals and oversees matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion for staff, students, and families.

“My responsibilities include planning, directing, coordinating, and providing assistance in addressing the needs of students and families from historically marginalized backgrounds,” said Brown. “I work closely with schools, offering coordination, consultation, guidance, and support to ensure effective communication with parents and families. An essential aspect of my role is ensuring equity in our policies, practices, and procedures throughout the district. Additionally, I serve as a liaison to external agencies, fostering partnerships and staying informed about best practices in culturally relevant pedagogy and inclusion.”

Brown graduated from the Coatesville Area School District in 2007. He then pursued his bachelor’s degree in public relations from Slippery Rock University. During his schooling, he initiated the Diversity Awareness Program (D.A.P), a dedicated effort to raise awareness and educate institutions about the importance of diversity and the embracing of all cultures and backgrounds.

Continuing his commitment to D.A.P, Brown pursued his graduate studies at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earning a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education.

“This graduate program provided me with a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of student development, higher education administration, and the role of diversity in fostering a supportive academic environment,” said Brown. “My educational background, combined with my experiences in creating and sustaining the Diversity Awareness Program, has equipped me with valuable insights and skills to contribute meaningfully to educational and student-focused initiatives. I am dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic settings and beyond.”

Brown, who landed his first job as a busboy at the Country Gardens restaurant in Parkesburg at 14 years old, credits Rita Abent, the previous Executive Director for Public Relations at Slippery Rock, with having the greatest impact on his career.

“Rita played a pivotal role in shaping my professional trajectory by introducing me to the communications field and consistently looking out for my growth,” he said. “She exemplified the profound impact and lasting legacy one can create by investing in students and encouraging kindness, respect, empathy, and understanding.”

Brown recalls one of his proudest professional moments as being selected as a member of the NASA Astrophysics database of IDEA practitioners. In this role, he evaluated the Inclusion Plans of scientific proposals submitted to the Astrophysics Division’s “Inclusion Plan Pilot Program.”

“Additionally, I have served on several committees and played a key role in overseeing equity in various projects initiated by NASA, further enhancing diversity and inclusion within the organization,” said Brown. “Another significant milestone is completing my first book, titled UGH!?! Not Another Diversity Book, where I share insights and perspectives on fostering diversity and inclusion in professional spaces.”

Brown’s favorite Chester County restaurant is Green Street Cafe in Downingtown.

“The establishment is known for its fantastic breakfast and overall delicious menu,” he said. “I love the honey mustard chicken wrap, which is my go-to meal when dining there. The combination of flavors and the welcoming atmosphere make it a standout choice in the area.”

Brown and the rest of the 2024 Class of VISTA Millennial Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, May 9 at Penn State Great Valley.
