West Chester Rustin's Riley Stackhouse, left, waits to check in as her mother Lauren coaches next to her on Jan. 14.

Seven years ago, Lauren and Riley Stackhouse became player and coach while already being mother and daughter, writes Owen McCue for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lauren Stackhouse has been the girls’ head basketball coach at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester for the past five seasons before Riley joined. Now halfway through her senior year at Rustin, Riley’s time as her mother’s player is ending. She is set to continue her career with Widener University.

“It’s been awesome,” Lauren said. “I’m so lucky to have that extra time with her. For me sometimes it’s hard because she is my daughter. We kind of have a rule that when we step into the gym, we are not mother-daughter, we are player-coach.”

Riley was an All-Ches-Mont honorable mention last season when the Golden Knights, led by Lauren and Riley, won their second straight Ches-Mont League title, the District 1-5A championship, and went to the state semifinals.

Next year, when Riley continues at Widener, Lauren will become a spectator in the stands. While she is grateful for every minute they have spent together on the court, she’s excited to watch Riley excel on her own.
