With Help from Malvern Nonprofit, Brain Aneurysm Survivor ‘Fights Back’

By

Chris McIver was working one of his three jobs to support his wife and son when he suddenly collapsed from a brain aneurysm. While his long road to recovery involved medicines, therapy, and more, it still wasn’t enough. This is when Malvern nonprofit Fighting Back Scholarship Program stepped in, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

Started by Scott Dillman in the late 1980s, the Fighting Back Scholarship Program serves as a support and care center for traumatic injury survivors or individuals with disabilities. It helps courageous individuals overcome their current circumstances to improve their lives.

Dillman said, “The Fighting Back Scholarship Program became a place for people to go that have these situations throughout the Delaware Valley.”

McIver has been using the physical therapy gym there to regain strength and bask in the community it has given him.

“When I’m here, I feel like I’m back to my old self,” said McIver.

McIver was recognized during their Annual Achievement Night two years ago. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to coaching and mentoring at the Williamson Trade School. His next goal is to learn how to drive again.

“They gave me a piece of myself back,” he said.
