Clocktower Farm in West Chester, a treasured landmark in Brandywine Valley, has been completely renovated with an abundance of historic charm, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for The Hunt

When Beth and Chris Knauer first saw the iconic Chester County estate in 2016, the once-elegant 1830 mansion was in disarray and headed to auction the following day. A developer wanted to buy the property, raze the building, and build luxury homes in its place.

The Knauers, who had dreamed of owning a historic home for three decades, did not allow that to happen. Instead they bought the property and restored it to its former glory.

They turned to Archer & Buchanan Architecture in West Chester for a plan allowing for large gatherings but also preserving the historical character of the home.

The solution was to create several small gathering spaces and seating areas that would have an open flow to accommodate guests.

During the renovation process, the original lockboxes, brass doorknobs, and cast-iron rat-tail hinges were restored.

“We reused everything we possibly could,” said Chris Knauer.

The property now has a new sunken garden and the 68-foot clocktower has been restored from the ground up.
