After nearly half a century in the studio, Chester County artist J. Clayton Bright continues to evolve both as a sculptor and painter in the Brandywine Valley, writes Roger Morris for The Hunt

“After I sold that first sculpture of a cow, I said I’d give myself three to five years to see if I could make a living at it,” he said. “Fortunately, I’ve never had to have a job since.”

Before he sold his first sculpture of a cow in his early 30s, Bright had done a myriad of different jobs and had never even thought about being an artist. He was also not married at the time and did not have the specific self-imposed pressure to sell more of his creations as soon as possible.

Over the years, he developed into a successful painter and sculptor who is well-recognized regionally and has a good reputation nationwide.

He has devoted much more of his life to creating three-dimensional works rather than paintings.

“Sculpture is the real thing,” he said. But there is “more freedom in painting than in sculpting.”
