The Colonial Theatre will host Larry & Joe on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the 1903 Theatre at 7:30 PM.

They call it Latingrass – and when it sweeps you up, you’ll immediately know why. Joropo maestro Larry Bellorín and bluegrass star Joe Troop are two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists who fuse their respective folk traditions into an engaging bilingual program of storytelling, humor, and singalongs.

Larry & Joe play harp, banjo, fiddle, cuatro, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they can fit in their van. Join them for an evening of music that swings, inspires, and unites.

Bellorín hails from Monagas, Venezuela, and is a legend of Llanera music. Troop is from North Carolina and is a Grammy-nominated bluegrass and old-time musician.

Bellorín was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Troop, after a decade in South America, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Bellorín worked construction to make ends meet. Troop’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum-seeking migrants. Then Bellorín met Troop. Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders.

As a duo, they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.
