Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Khalid Mumin visited Avon Grove Intermediate School recently to highlight the national “Lights on Afterschool” program, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News

Mumin addressed around 167 second through fifth graders who take part in the program aimed at young English language learners who do not usually speak it at home. The students get learning support, help with homework, and take part in various activities. They also receive a snack.

“The program is designed to help children, while advancing their education experience, especially children from high poverty and low socio-economic backgrounds,” said Mumim.

The 21st Century Partnership is a district and Chester County Intermediate Unit collaboration. Most of the activities are based on STEM teaching.

Mumin, who oversees all the schools in the state, asked students if any of them wanted to become a doctor, scientist, or football star. Several raised their hands.

“Programs like these give you whatever you dream,” he said. “Don’t let anyone tell you differently. You are talented, you are special, smart, beautiful, handsome. Learning is cool. You can be whatever you want.”
