West Chester Railroad Officially Opens New and Improved Crossing
West Chester Railroad recently celebrated the official opening of the new and improved single-track railroad grade crossing at East Nields Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a new sign, according to a staff report from The Daily Local News.
The rebuilding of the crossing will ensure the safe passage of both train and automobile traffic.
The West Chester Railroad Heritage Association was able to perform a total repair and replacement of the grade crossing and track thanks to funding secured by state Senator Carolyn Comitta.
Comitta visited the railroad last fall for its 25th-anniversary celebration, where she became aware of the need to make major repairs on the crossing. She then helped secure $50,000 for the project through the Pennsylvania Community and Economic Assistance Program.
“I was happy to secure this investment in the West Chester Railroad, which continues to attract visitors and families to our area while teaching young people about the history, science, and technology of rail travel,” said Comitta. “Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of the many volunteers who invest their time, energy, and expertise in this nonprofit organization.”
