In Nearly Two Decades as Westtown Coach, Seth Berger Built School Into Elite Basketball Program
In his seventeen years as Westtown School’s head basketball coach, Seth Berger built the Chester County educational institution into an elite basketball program, writes Isabella DiAmore for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The boarding school secured nine Friends Schools League titles along with four Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association titles. But for the coach, it is not about the championships or how many NBA players it helped develop. Instead, it is about impacting the life of a teenager through basketball.
“I really had no intentions of building a program that has attracted the players we have,” said Berger. “For me, I knew I didn’t want to go into politics after being in politics for years, and coaching basketball for me is the most fun way of making a difference.”
Many students from across the country have come to Westtown, hoping to get more exposure and increase their chances of reaching the college or professional level.
After spending a year at Duke, Dereck Lively is the most recent Westtown graduate who was selected in the first round of the NBA draft. Others before him include Mo Bamba, Cam Reddish, and Brandon Randolph.
