After a vote of confidence from the Philadelphia Phillies nearly two decades ago, DuraEdge Products, a Grove City, Pennsylvania dirt farm, now supplies infield mix for the majority of MLB teams, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The company works with 26 out of the 30 MLB teams thanks to one specific ingredient: Pittsburgh red bed clay. This claystone is unique in how it reacts to water.

Pittsburgh red bed clay is predominantly made out of illite and kaolinite, two clay minerals that can absorb water without swelling and dissipate it quickly.

“For the owners of the teams, it’s about playing in the rain,” said Grant McKnight, president of DuraEdge Products. “You equate it to monetizing what the cost of the infield was versus playing a game in the rain.”

In 2005, the Phillies decided to use DuraEdge Products for the infield.

After that, “it started to get out a bit more around this part of the country that I’m the dirt guy,” said McKnight.
