Equestrian Therapy Helps Instill Confidence in Malvern Second-Grader

By

Emma Celenza, a Malvern second-grader who was born with a mid-forearm amputation, now believes she can do anything she sets her mind to thanks to equestrian therapy, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“I’m strong, brave, and I can do anything,” said the 7-year-old. “Riding horses definitely helped me believe it.”

Celenza started riding horses at Hope Springs Equestrian Therapy in Chester Springs. The program is designed for people with any sort of disability or condition.

At the farm, Celenza has managed to translate her love of animals into a hobby that helps her find her inner strength.

“We came here because we heard it was really good,” said Celenza. “Then, I met Hammy and I kind of felt like the first day that I saw him that we would be like really good friends.”

Hammy is the steed that is helping the girl develop her skills further. The two were paired together by Hope Springs Executive Director Jeannie Knowlton, who has a sort of sixth sense when it comes to pairing horses with riders.

“You end up coming to us with a diagnosis, whether it is a mental disability or a physical disability,” she said. “Then, we can open the doors for you.”
