After damage to the West Chester Railroad, the community has come together to raise funds and provide support.

Volunteers at the West Chester Railroad Heritage Association are feeling disheartened following a weekend incident of senseless vandalism, but they aren’t giving up, writes Nikki DeMentri for CBS News Philadelphia

A group of teenagers broke into the rail yard and trashed a rail car and a truck at the place frequented by families and train enthusiasts.

Cleanup and repairs are currently underway.

This is not the first time the all-volunteer organization that runs the tourist railroad between West Chester and Glen Mills has been hit by vandals, but this time it was especially troublesome. Repair costs could exceed $10,000.

“They really hit it hard on the backside,” said Skip Small, the vice president of the West Chester Railroad Heritage Association.

Following the incident being posted on the association’s Facebook page, the community has helped raise around $1,500 for repairs and support has been pouring in.
