West Chester Native, Dual-Sport Athlete Maggie Pina Heads to Northwestern University
Maggie Pina, a West Chester native and dual-sport athlete in basketball and field hockey, is headed to Northwestern University as a graduate student transfer, writes Isabella DiAmore for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
For Pina, a graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, academics always came first. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in criminal justice at Boston University. She achieved that while being a Division I athlete.
Pina played basketball for four years at BU. She was known as a stellar sharpshooter and ranked fifth in the history of the program for most three-pointers made in a career — 186. During her senior year, she also earned a walk-on spot on the field hockey team.
Currently, her plans include becoming a criminal justice attorney, either doing pro bono work or assisting the Innocence Project.
She is now getting closer to her professional goal. She entered the transfer portal in June, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility she had. That is when Northwestern reached out to her about basketball and she readily accepted.
“I want to be able to have the best schools on my resumé,” she said.
