Malvern Prep Water Polo Team Swim From Alcatraz
As part of the annual fundraiser for hydrocephalus research, the Malvern Prep water polo team took on the cold waters of San Francisco Bay on Aug. 19 to swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco, writes Bruce Adams for The Daily Local News.
The Malvern Prep team joined a group of 80 swimmers at the 19th annual Alcatraz Swim for Hydrocephalus Research. They were led by Peter Finlayson, a Malvern resident whose younger sister Kate passed away in 2010 during one of her many surgeries related to the neurological condition.
“With the addition of the Malvern Prep water polo team, we’ve doubled the number of swimmers joining us this year, and we have a waitlist,” said Finlayson.
The swim kicked off the Malvern Prep water polo team’s rigorous pre-season training trip to Northern California.
“This swim presents a tremendous challenge for our team and we wanted to do something as part of Malvern Prep’s mission and focus on Christian service while in California,” said Malvern Prep water polo coach Jay Schiller ahead of the race.
