‘Delco Dawgs’ Suspends Medical Care for Dogs Due to Lack of Funds

By

Delco Dawgs is on a mission to leave no dog behind, but the all-volunteer nonprofit group is at a crisis point because it can no longer afford to pay for medical treatment and care of the animals, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

Jill Speckman of Drexel Hill started Delco Dawgs after leaving a successful 25-year career in radio.

“There was a large problem in Delaware County with animals, just not having enough animal control, not having enough humane officers,” she said.

Delco Dawgs relies on volunteers and adoptive families to provide shelter for the dogs. The group grew to provide search and rescue for lost dogs, and they took in abused and injured animals to get them medical care.

Delco Dawgs relied on community donations and the compassion of local veterinarians, such as those at VRC Emergency Pet Care & Specialty Hospital in Malvern.

“But our bills get so high so quickly that even in just a couple of months, the bill gets up to $100,000,” Speckman said.

With a summertime surge in lost or mistreated dogs, the group can no longer take any new animals for medical treatment.

Other parts of their operation will continue with the hope that new fundraising efforts will again allow medical care for the dogs.
