Chester County Highway Signage to be Updated
Susan Hamley, executive director of Chester County Tourism, presented the county’s plans to update its highway signage in a meeting with the Kennett Township Board of Supervisors earlier this month, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.
The wayfinding signage initiative will introduce newly-designed signage throughout the county’s major corridors and transportation corridors. The motivation to develop the new signage came from the fact that all the current signs are out of compliance with PennDOT regulations.
“They were first created in the 1980s, and there is nothing about them that works anymore,” said Hamley. “They are fading, they are falling down and there is no reflective lettering. They have too many characters. They are on the wrong side of the road, and too many are covered by bushes and trees and too close to the ground.”
Additionally, several intersections have several signs next to each other, which has led to confusion among motorists and tourists.
“Our goal is to de-clutter, not to add more signs,” added Hamley.
The project is being implemented in consultation with West Chester-based Merje Design. The objective is to make as many as 100 new signs.
