Artist With Down Syndrome Teams Up to Create Pet Portraits

By

A partnership between Jake Spencer, an artist with Down Syndrome, and his support professional, Caron Lee, is generating some impressive pet art, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

Lee works for The Arc of Chester County helping adults with disabilities get out into the community.

She partnered with Spencer about six years ago.

“And we started by painting a portrait of Jake’s dog.”

Spencer had some real artistic talent and now the two collaborate on portraits of neighborhood pups under the name, “Pet Portraits by Jake and Caron”.

Dog lovers in the community are commissioning them to create real and imaginary settings of their pets from photos. Spencer loves to paint and finds it relaxing.

“Me and Caron have been collaborating together as a team. I think she’s one of the best artists, painters, and I love her as a person she is right now.”

The duo recently opened their first public exhibit at the Media Theatre Studio in Media Borough.

“There aren’t a lot of programs available for adults after they graduate from school,” said Lee. “So, if more people would join jobs like these, you can work with amazing people like Jake and make sure that they stay engaged and active and social and it’s just worthwhile.”
