A popular bagel business is spreading across the Philadelphia region and beyond. Spread Bagelry is known for its Montreal-style bagels baked in wood-fired ovens. Chester County residents enjoy one of its shops in Wayne, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The first brick-and-mortar location opened in Philly in 2011. Today ten locations are scattered throughout the city and the suburbs, including Wayne.

Four additional stores will open in the suburbs, including Upper Dublin, Ambler, Wynnewood, and Newtown Square.

In addition to the suburbs, the local bagel chain is expanding its reach to the South, where there is a “bagel desert.”

Spread Bagelry will open two new shops in Charleston, South Carolina and one outpost in Savannah, Georgia.

“We also have a lot of northerners moving down there that are used to bagels. It’s not just a biscuit business down there. It’s all these Northerners are dying for us and they’re telling us that as we go down there,” said CEO Jamie Schrotberger.

Schrotberger has big hopes for the future. In addition to the locations, the chain has plans to open locations in New Hope, Princeton, and the D.C. area. In the South, the bagel chain is looking at Myrtle Beach, and Jacksonville, Florida.
