Stephanie Ruby, of Elverson, is more than happy to indulge in the advent calendar trend that has been growing dramatically over the last several years, writes Maura Judkis for The Washington Post.
For the first 24 days of December, she starts her day by carefully opening several advent calendars, beginning with the Bonne Maman advent calendar that hides small jars of jam behind the tiny windows. After she discusses the daily flavor with her group chat of fellow jamheads, she moves on to her Walker’s Shortbread advent calendar, before wrapping up the opening ceremony with her Flour Power advent calendar.
“Every day was like a fun little surprise,” she said. “As adults, there’s not a lot of surprise in our lives.”
Many feel the same way as Ruby, as the advent calendar market has exploded recently. Simple chocolate-hiding calendars that helped kids countdown the days to Santa coming have now morphed into a vast selection of goods that include makeup, beer and wine, jewelry, and dog treats, among much more.
And thanks to unboxing videos that are flooding social media, some advent calendars have attracted a cult following, such as Bonne Maman’s.
