A 245,000 square foot arena for indoor bike racing, or velodrome, could make Coatesville a track cycling destination, writes Michael Tanenbaum for the PhillyVoice.
Developers have hit the ground running on this $79 million project, receiving $9 million of state funding for land development. The arena, called the National Sports and Events Center, will be adjacent to the city’s High Bridge landmark. If completed, it would be the first permanent indoor velodrome of Eastern U.S.
The 24-acre property will also serve as a concert venue, convention center, and host for other sports-related events. It will include a Boy’s and Girl’s Club, meeting rooms, an entertainment center, family rooms, and more.
The goal for the National Sports and Events Center would be to serve as a hub for Olympic and Paralympic training.
The International Development Group is behind the project. It’s a joint venture between New Heritage Properties and a team of developers. Construction could begin as early as late 2023 with an estimated completion date in 2025.
