Josie Harper, a 1965 West Chester University graduate and the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, has been an advocate for women’s sports in the Ivy League for decades, writes Justin Lafleur for USA Lacrosse Magazine

Harper grew up in the Philadelphia area, where she played competitive basketball in seventh grade.

“I had everything growing up in the Philly area; my high school had every sport you could think of for girls,” she said.

After high school, West Chester was the obvious choice for her.

“There were only a few schools you could attend if you wanted to play team sports at that time, and West Chester was one of them,” she said.

Harper continued to be passionate about sports her entire life and she has turned that passion into an impacting legacy.

The legendary former Dartmouth coach became the first-ever female athletic director in the Ivy League at the end of last century. She also coached with the U.S. women’s national team for nearly a decade and was the head coach of the first U.S. Women’s Under-21 team.
