West Grove E-Waste Recycler Refurbishes 30,000 Laptops Monthly
Sycamore International, a West Grove-based e-waste recycler, refurbishes around 30,000 old laptops a month, writes Andrew Maykuth for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Those that cannot be saved are destroyed for parts. Each week, four tractor-trailer loads of dismantled or restored devices leave the facility.
“We’re excited about the future of this whole industry,” said Sycamore International president Steve Figgatt.
Figgatt started his electronics reconditioning business in the basement of his mother’s home. He then expanded into a garage before moving into a 28,000-square-foot former mushroom-growing barn in West Grove. This location is still the home of Sycamore International, which he named after his favorite tree.
The company has an advantage over its competitors when it comes to raw materials in that it has developed a niche. Sycamore focuses on education. It pays school districts in Pennsylvania and several other states to recover and dispose of their old student laptops.
