The donut biz — having already responded to flavor trends from 1960s sugary cereal toppings to cross-breeding (cronuts) to alcohol infusions — is evolving once again. Mochi Ring Donut, a new chain, now has two shops in Montgomery County, selling fried dough circles made from the namesake Japanese rice cakes. Details on this latest donut development were sprinkled throughout the coverage in What Now Philly.

Mochi donuts have been popular in Asia for quite some time. But they’re just beginning to make their way to the U.S., in bakery numbers rising throughout the East Coast.

Mochi Ring Donut, an Edison, N.J. chain, brings an innovative array of flavors to the sweet, offering varieties tinged with Nutella, taro (a root plant), matcha (processed green tea leaves), ube (a purple yam), and black sesame. These specialties join more traditional fare such as those with churro flavors and those with a milk chocolate topping.

To bring some additional variety to the takeout menu, Mochi Ring Donut also offers deep-fried Korean rice hot dogs, another food sensation that has been sweeping the nation.

Made from either sausage, mozzarella (or a combination of the two), Korean rice dogs are skewered and coated in a sweet flour batter before being rolled in a layer of toppings.

In addition to its new outlets in Montgomery County — 101 Fayette Street, Conshohocken; 832 North Bethlehem Pike in Spring House — Mochi Ring Donuts plans additional sites in Upper Darby and Cherry Hill.
