Despite a full year having passed since Hurricane Ida tore through the region, leaving flooding and damage in its wake, some Chester County residents are still feeling the effects of the destructive storm, write Kenny Cooper, Emily Rizzo, and Sophia Schmidt for WHYY

Jenny Hines, who lives in the Borough of Modena, lost a portion of her house when a tree fell on it. That entire part of the home still needs to be replaced, but Hines’ insurance will not cover it. Hines’ husband, a medically-retired Marine, has tried and failed to get help from veterans’ organizations.

Hines also reached out to FEMA, but they just told her to get help from her insurance company.

“People have forgotten that there’s still people dealing with the damage,” said Hines.

Meanwhile, Erica Lee, who lives with her family in a farmhouse in Newlin Township, lost everything on the first floor of their home along with six cars and work vehicles.

Some of the expenses were covered by flood insurance but the family has had to pay for everything else out of pocket. Today, there is still water damage that needs fixing, including installing new flooring.
