The first impression is extremely important when looking for a new job, and in most cases, a recruiter’s or hiring manager’s first perception will be based solely on a candidate’s LinkedIn profile picture, writes Asia Johnson for Job Journey, a blog of Express Employment Professionals.

In fact, just having a photo on your profile makes it 14 times more likely that it will be viewed by others, according to LinkedIn.

To leave the best first impression, do not sabotage your profile with selfies. If you are not able to get a professional headshot, ask a family member or a friend to take one using your phone while you have your professional attire on. Also, be mindful of your background. You want it to look professional and basic, not distracting.

Since LinkedIn occasionally changes its layout, you will have to meet its latest visual requirements. Currently, that is 400 by 400 pixels. While larger files are also accepted, it is best to avoid small, low-resolution images that will make the picture look blurred.

Additionally, your photo should reflect your current look. That means that if your picture is 10 years old, it is time to replace it.
