The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Kennett Library a $10,000 grant to support adult literacy.

Each year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides financial support to schools, nonprofits, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of Dollar General stores and distribution centers.

The Kennett Library’s grant is part of the foundation’s recent awarding of $10.5 million to support summer, family, and adult literacy programs.

Since 1979, Kennett Library’s Adult Literacy Program has helped students from more than 55 countries improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills. The free program runs from September to May and offers day and evening classes.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the support of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation,” said Filomena Elliott, the Director of Kennett Library’s Adult Literacy Program. “Our mission is to teach basic literacy skills and English language skills. This grant will allow us to continue to provide our students with the necessary materials and technological tools to not only improve their literacy and job skills but also, as a result, their standard of living.”
