Hiring Chesco: The Differences Between a Job and a Career

Job-hopping was traditionally seen as a red flag by employers, but it has now become more acceptable to have several short-term jobs on your resume, writes Caleb Yen for Job Journey, a blog of Express Employment Professionals.

However, while there is nothing wrong with doing a job strictly for a paycheck, ideally, these positions will all fall within a certain career path.

In a job, you are not learning anything new. Employers want to see that your career path is moving forward. This means that you have been learning and gaining new responsibilities in each new position.

If you worked for one company for several years and then transferred to another company into a higher position, that is a career. But if you had similar jobs in several different companies over the span of a few years, that may look like a string of jobs.

Basically, a career consists of jobs where ideally each one provides you with access to a better job. This does not necessarily mean that each job pays more, but that you learned something in each position that can be applied to your next job.
