Church Farm School will host a 24-hour online campaign today to commemorate its founding on April 1, 1918 and to raise funds for a new, all-weather track.
To celebrate its 104th birthday, CFS is hoping to raise $52,000. Dr. John Grunwell, a member of CFS’s Class of 1960, and another generous donor have agreed to match that figure in order to cover the $104,000 needed for the six-lane, 400-meter track with a new playing field at its center.
In 1923, the school’s first graduating class instituted a track meet that has since become a permanent fixture of commencement week.
Track is the only sport offered every season at CFS, and it’s also one of the most financially accessible sports. Track has always been a prominent sport at the school, with many noting that “the vigor derived from farm work was particularly evident at track events.”
